The construction industry has a major problem: a lack of skilled tradespeople.
Ask almost any contractor and they’ll tell you the same thing. There is plenty of work available, but finding skilled people to deliver it is becoming increasingly difficult.
At DASCO, we believe part of the solution starts in schools.
Recently, Managing Director Scott Rothwell visited students at St Mary’s RC High School and Golborne High School to talk about careers in construction, apprenticeships and the opportunities available within the trades.
Showing Young People What’s Possible
For many students, construction is still seen as a narrow career path.
The reality is very different.
Today’s construction industry offers opportunities across a wide range of roles, from electrical and gas engineering to project management, surveying, customer care, health and safety, administration and leadership.
During the sessions, Scott shared his own journey and spoke honestly about the opportunities available to young people willing to work hard, learn new skills and build a career within the industry.
The aim was to help students understand the variety of pathways available and show them that successful careers can be built through apprenticeships and vocational routes as well as traditional academic pathways.
Investing in the Future
As a growing business, DASCO understands the challenges facing the construction sector.
Our biggest challenge today isn’t finding work.
It’s finding enough skilled people to deliver it.
That’s why we continue to invest in apprenticeships, training and career development within our own business, while also supporting schools and colleges to raise awareness of opportunities within the industry.
By engaging with young people early, we hope to inspire the next generation of tradespeople, engineers, supervisors and business leaders.
Creating Opportunities
At DASCO, we are passionate about creating opportunities for local people.
Many of our team members started their careers through apprenticeships or entry-level roles before progressing into positions of responsibility within the business.
We know first-hand what can happen when someone is given the chance to develop their skills and fulfil their potential.
That’s why sessions like these are so important.
They help young people see opportunities they may not have previously considered and encourage them to think about the many different routes available to a successful career.
Looking Ahead
We would like to thank the staff and students at St Mary’s RC High School and Golborne High School for their warm welcome and engagement during both sessions.
Supporting the next generation isn’t just good for the construction industry. It’s good for our communities, our local economy and the future workforce we all rely upon.
At DASCO, we’re proud to play our part.
