Why Winning the Wigan Business Awards Employer of the Year Meant Everything to Us

Winning Employer of the Year at the Wigan Business Awards 2024 was a proud moment for DASCO.
It was validation that the Rothwell way is the right way.

In an industry that’s often tough, fast-paced, and unforgiving, this award recognised something we’ve always believed in: putting people first works

This One Was for the Team

Construction doesn’t happen without people and their skill. Buildings don’t build themselves.

It’s the people on the tools that matter.

This award belonged to all our Dasconites
The ones who’ve grown with us, backed us, and believed in what we’re building.

Many of our team have been with DASCO for years.

They’ve seen the business grow from a small family operation into a multi-award-winning employer.

This win told them that the way we’ve done things mattered

Why Being a Good Employer Matters in Construction

Construction has a massive skills shortage, and it’s not going away.
It also has a significant well-being problem with frightening statistics attached.

Too many people leave the industry because they feel unsupported, overlooked, or burnt out.

We decided early on that DASCO would be different.

To get the balance right, we focus on:

  • Secure employment, not disposable labour
  • Clear progression, not empty promises
  • Wellbeing, not just productivity

We listen.
We act.

Retention matters to us, so we invest in our people properly.

From day one, we’ve stood by our belief that progression comes from potential, not paperwork so ‘wellbeing’ isn’t a policy, it’s part of daily life.

What the Award Really Recognised

Employer of the Year mattered because it didn’t just celebrate growth.
It recognised how we’ve grown.

It recognised:

  • Long-serving staff who helped build the business
  • Apprentices finding real career pathways
  • Leaders who came up through the ranks
  • A culture where people feel safe, valued, and heard

Our industry desperately needs better employers, and we’re proud to lead the way.

Words from Scott

“This award meant more to me than most. Construction is nothing without its people. We’ve always said we’d build DASCO around our team, not at their expense. To have that recognised meant everything. This one belonged to the Dasconites.”
— Scott Rothwell, Managing Director

Words from Charlotte

“I see the dedication every day. The loyalty. The pride. This award recognised the effort that often goes unseen. It was emotional, because it proved that looking after people really does matter.”
— Charlotte Rothwell, Accounts Manager

A Moment We’ll Never Forget

Winning Employer of the Year gave us a real boost in confidence, it gave our team pride and it gave us energy to keep going.

We’re growing fast but we’re scaling responsibly and we’re doing it together.

Because over time awards fade but our culture will last.

So, this one?
This one was always about the people.

Happy 16th Birthday, Roxy!

Not every member of the DASCO team wears a hard hat.  Some prefer a blanket, a comfy bed and the occasional treat.  This week, we celebrated a very special birthday as our beloved office dog, Roxy, turned 16.  Roxy has been coming to work with us for almost nine years and has become a familiar face around the office. While

Inspiring the Next Generation of Skilled Tradespeople

The construction industry has a major problem: a lack of skilled tradespeople.  Ask almost any contractor and they’ll tell you the same thing. There is plenty of work available, but finding skilled people to deliver it is becoming increasingly difficult.  At DASCO, we believe part of the solution starts in schools.  Recently, Managing Director Scott Rothwell visited students at St Mary’s RC
